He waited thousands of years for freedom and spent it serving someone who didn't care

The divorce papers he files are the first real choice he has ever made in his entire existence
Elijah has been granting wishes since before recorded history. That is not a figure of speech. A magic lamp, a rule of three, and whoever picks it up next: that has been his entire life for millennia, and the word life is already generous, since he has had no meaningful say in any of it. The billionaire who holds his lamp near the end of the story is the first person to spend a wish on someone other than himself, and even that generosity has a price attached.
The condition is marriage. Elijah can have his freedom, but first he must spend five years as the husband of the old man's granddaughter, Christine. He transforms into a human to fulfill the terms, which means taking on all the limitations of a human body and none of the exemptions that come with being a supernatural being. He is mortal for the duration, he has a name and an address and a wife, and none of this was remotely his idea.
Christine is not a villain. That distinction matters for how the series works. She does not know what Elijah is, does not know her grandfather traded a wish for her husband, and is not plotting anything against him. She is simply a person who received a spouse she did not want and decided, reasonably enough, that indifference was the safest policy. She ignores him when she can, belittles him when she cannot, and builds her career with the ferocious single-mindedness of someone who has decided that professional success is the one area of her life she can actually control.
What she does not know is who is clearing her path. Elijah works behind everything she accomplishes, arranging deals, removing obstacles, engineering the conditions under which her talent can actually function. He does not announce this. He has no motivation to announce it, because he was not looking for gratitude when he started and he is not sure what he would do with it now. But somewhere in the construction of her empire, something shifts in him that has nothing to do with the original terms of the agreement.
The clock becomes the real antagonist. With five years almost finished, the question the series refuses to let either character avoid is whether anything real was built inside an arrangement that was false from the start. Elijah watching Christine succeed at things he quietly made possible, and Christine never once turning around to see who was behind her, is the emotional image the show keeps returning to. He files for divorce as an act of self-preservation, which is itself a new concept for a being who has never had a self to preserve.
Fifty-one episodes is exactly the right length for this premise, long enough for the accumulation of small moments to matter and short enough that the format keeps both characters in motion. Crazy Maple Studio has built this for the phone, and the vertical frame suits the tone better than it might seem, since the story is fundamentally about two people who are never quite looking at each other directly. The genie mythology gives the romance a structural reason for the imbalance between them, and the story's best moments are the ones where that mythology is heaviest: when a being capable of rearranging reality cannot make the simplest human thing happen on its own.
